On the quay walls, the once brisk turnover of goods has given way to strolling passers-by, instead of large cargo ships, round trip barges now sail through the harbour basins and the former storage sheds have made way for office and residential buildings – we are on our way in the largest inner-city development project in Europe, where ships once unloaded the fine colonial goods from all over the world.
GIGANTIC – FROM THE ONCE MOST MODERN PORT AREA TO THE PULSATING CITY DISTRICT
When the Sandtorhafen basin was inaugurated in 1860 as the first of a total of seven in the new, video-open port area, Hamburg was finally able to keep up with the major ports in New York and London – the construction of the port was an important investment for trade in Hamburg.
For over 15 years, Hamburg’s Waterfront has once again undergone massive redesign. Lively, pioneering and original, HafenCity, Hamburg’s youngest district, presents itself. Here, modern cube architecture meets brick buildings worthy of preservation, the old harbour basins are given a new function and working, living and leisure are united on the 157-hour large new inner city area.
Together we take a closer look at this showcase project. We stroll through finished, already lively quarters and at the same time through the eventful past of this once modern port area. But you will also get an overview of the projects currently under construction or future projects. There is a lot going on here every day – you can obviously experience how an urban district is literally being built on the empty port areas.
Our joint tour ends at HafenCity University – with a view of the second construction site along Bakenhafen harbour. From here you can explore the area even further or take the S-Bahn to Jungfernstieg.
