EXPERIENCE THE HEART OF THE TRADING CITY OF TRADE AND COMMERCE FOLLOWING IN THE TRACKS OF HISTORY
When the new town hall on the Alster was ceremonially opened in 1897 after eleven years of construction, the horrors of the Great Fire of 1842 were finally forgotten. It embodies the merchant pride of that age of trade – an era no less exciting than the period of the Hanseatic League. Even today we can still read about it on the façade of the town hall.
Today the city centre is dominated by stores and retail businesses, but the historical core is largely preserved. After this tour there is enough time for a shopping trip. Before that, you will embark on a journey through time with me through the stirring history of the now elegant city with its long tradition of trade. On our walk through the heart of Hamburg I will not only show you the immediately obvious, but also eye-catchers and curiosities that only become apparent at second glance.
I deliberately begin my tour at Jungfernstieg, where refined and well-bred young ladies once used to promenade. Attractions on this popular tour include the first shopping arcade, the town hall of course, the beginnings of the port as an important economic factor, the Kern poodle, a memorial that is sadly all too often overlooked, as well as hidden dikes and the old or new landmark of Hamburg.
Our tour together ends in front of our beloved Michel, THE landmark of Hamburg that has such an eventful history. Afterwards you can climb the tower of the Michel and enjoy the view or from here you can continue through the Portuguese Quarter to the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken.
