The old, original lift cages creak up and down, the east tunnel shines in new splendour, Elbe animals accompany us through the tunnel – we walk around and through the Old Elbe Tunnel, which was built over 100 years ago as a workers’ tunnel…

AROIUND, IN AND THROUGH THE ST. PAULI ELBTUNNEL

The St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel, to give it its full name , is one of the most popular sights on the Waterkant in Hamburg. In the summer it provides a chance to cool down , the inhabitants of Hamburg use it as a fast way to cross  the Elbe and it is an important part of the history of Hamburg’s port.

The Old Elbe Tunnel was built to make it easier for the masses of dock  and shipyard workers to get to work on the other side of the Elbe. Even during its construction more than 100 years ago, the only tunnel for a river crossing in Europe to date was considered a masterpiece of engineering, which makes it an excellent historical landmark of civil engineering in Germany today.

Nowadays  it is much more than  merely a modest  link  between the two banks of the Elbe. As part of the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, they together represent some of  the most frequently visited places in Hamburg . The landing stages were also once of great importance for the port of Hamburg.

Join me on a short journey back in time through the development of the port on this side of the Elbe and then across to the other side – from the first steamship that moored  here at the floating pontoon facility to the symphonic sounds that can be heard from from the tunnels .

After a fascinating walk through the Old Elbe Tunnel our  tour together ends  above ground at the entrance building at the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken. From here you can continue on a  stroll to the fish market, while away the time at a restaurant  in the Portuguese Quarter or make your way to  the Reeperbahn.

Follow me on a short journey through time – I look forward to seeing you!

TIP

Would you like to take a cruise through the harbour before you start your tour… or enjoy a fresh fish sandwich on the other side of the Elbe… or relax in one of the beach clubs back on this side of the Elbe again?

If you would like to add your own personal ideas, I will gladly arrange a tailor-made tour for you. Route, duration and price of the tour can be arranged individually with me. Feel free to contact me: by phone, by e-mail or use the contact form to ask me your questions.
