– moated castle | Kaffeemietje | Westfalen tower | brick gothic | Fleete –
The smell of freshly roasted coffee wafts around our noses, spiders weave their webs in the niches of the mullioned windows of the historical granaries, carpets seem to fly on the hydraulic winds – we entered the city from granaries, where treasures from all over the world were stored in those days…
THEN HOTLY DESIRED, TODAY EVEN MORE POPULAR
When Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurated the Hamburg Speicherstadt in 1888, it was the most modern warehouse complex in the world and a duty-free paradise for merchants. It symbolised the rapid international growth of trade in Hamburg – an exciting time in the port of Hamburg.
But the brick business has undergone a change of use. Today, carpet traders and designers meet here, first-time tenants meet the new quarter men and traditional goods share the warehouse floors with museums and exhibitions.
During our walk through the historic warehouse complex I will not only show you the obvious, but also eye-catchers that only become apparent at second glance. During this tour, I myself often feel like the castellan who, on behalf of the Hamburger Freihafen Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft, made the warehouses palatable to prospective tenants at the time.
Ask me…
… what a quartermaster was?
… why are our canals called Fleet?
… why the Speicherstadt had its own town hall?
… who lived here before the Speicherstadt was built?
… how the fine colonial goods were stored, refined and controlled here?
Our joint tour ends at Fleetschlösschen, a former customs house of the Speicherstadt – with a view of the largest inner-city construction project in Europe opposite, HafenCity.
Follow me – I look forward to seeing you!
